SAFE IN OUR HANDS, IN OUR CARS, IN OUR CARE.
Responsibility for Health & Safety (including Road Risk Management), is a top-down process at Tristar - it’s that important. Our impressive safety records are a combined effort; we have a dedicated Road Safety Manager, but the responsibility for managing health, safety and road risk is carried by every employee, regardless of roles or departments. It is this team work and our commitment to safety which has been recognised and rewarded by RoSPA with their prestigious Gold Award for Management of Road Risk and Silver Award for Occupational Health and Safety.
CHAUFFEUR RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING
At Tristar, Road Risk Management begins early, at the recruitment level. All our chauffeurs must hold a valid private hire license (in London it is a PCO license) before they can begin work.
Applicants must also pass Tristar’s own recruitment procedures, which include theoretical and practical elements that are evaluated by our in-house team of assessors trained by the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
Once they have successfully met the recruitment criteria they begin our week long industry leading training program. A comprehensive and intensive course, this program covers a variety of subjects, including customer care, accident prevention training, vehicle safety training, and technology training.
Once recruits have successfully completed the training week, they undertake a practical examination in the form of a driving assessment, where they will need to put into practice everything learnt during the week’s training.
A Tristar candidate must pass at every stage. It is a tough process, but it is what ensures our chauffeurs are of the highest calibre in every aspect of the job they do for us. It doesn't stop there, to ensure that training and safety remains top-of-mind, we conduct regular refresher courses.
VEHICLE SAFETY AND TECHNOLOGY
Our fleet is comprised of some of the safest, most comfortable vehicles available in the UK, all under three years old and possessing a minimum 4* Euro NCAP rating.
Technology plays a big part in safety management. Our vehicles are equipped with some of the latest safety technology such as the City Safety automated braking system, Blind Spot Indication System as well as an in-car PDA device that is integrated with Tristar’s systems.
PDA units are a vital cog in our safety systems. On the road, they facilitate safer driving, e.g. by providing real-time tracking information, which can be used to manage chauffeur rest breaks, monitor speed and provide emergency notifications in case of accidents or vehicle failure. They are also essential in fleet maintenance, communicating with chauffeurs and relevant departments to ensure that vehicles are serviced in a timely and accurate manner, and that all faults are resolved immediately.
All fleet vehicles are equipped with interior Smart Witness cameras. The forward facing units provide a variety of benefits, including driver behaviour monitoring, which allows us to spot any issues, and conduct targeted personal training to improve chauffeurs’ skills.
COMMITMENT TO SAFETY STANDARDS
To further ensure safety standards are of the highest order, Tristar’s safety policies are overseen by its Health & Safety Committee. This team is made up of representatives of management, admin staff, chauffeurs and trade union members. The safety team has a great influence in implementation of safety policies, as well as identification of any potential risk and concerns.
CONSULTING THE EXPERTS
Safety procedures that follow our business model – first class in every respect, with nothing left to chance. To this end, we also engage Independent Health and Safety Consultants to monitor our procedures and provide us with quarterly audits. The consultants are there to examine and verify what we do in terms of safety, and to ensure our safety standards are best practice in every area of our business.
